This moving play, by the same writer of the ongoing Broadway and Boston smash hit, "I Love You, you're Perfect, Now Change", is a moving show about the meaning of family and how different generations view inter-family relationships. Indeed, Nick Christano, the grandson in the piece, declares his grandparents have reached an age he can barely comprehend.
Two sets of grandparents come to grips both with life's changing fortunes and a shocking annoucement from their grandson. At first glance, Nick Cristano is the ideal grandson, loving and devoted. However, Nick now has to make a decision.... a decision which will either blow his career out of the water or devastate his loving grandparents. If Nick chooses to accept a promotion offered by his employee, he will need to move to Seatle, Washington...the "far away Washington....out by California."
"This is an unique play," said Mike Wood, director of the piece as well as the actor playing Nick, "because it is simply about a family trying to right by each other. Nick's grandparents want and need him to be happy and successful, but they are not prepared to let him go."
Wood continues, "So they implore him not to go, and try all sorts of methods to make him stay. The most intriguing of which is a blind set up with a niece of one of the grandmother's canasta partners, Caitlyn O'Haire."
Caitlyn is played Erica Newhall, a Nashua resident along with Wood. Nick's grandparents on his mother's side, Frank and Aida, are played by Louis Marchiony and Sherri Middaugh, and his grandparents on his father's side, Nunzio and Emma, are played by Bill Pearre and Susan Kingsbury.
The play uses the unconventional conceit of sporadic side narratives spoken directly to the audience. These sidebars provide insights into the thoughts of each character and reveal some of the reasoning by idiosyncratic mannerisms of the family, especially the senior citizens. The grandparents, and later an enlightened Nick, reveal that the grandparent's antics are endearingly frantic efforts to continue the family line whom, ultimately, they just want to have better lives than they had.
According to the script, Nick's grandparents' "firmly believed in the F's of life, family, faith and food." The plays takes the audience on a sweet and sentimental journey into the heart of the family you may have had, or wish you may have had. Oversized and overbearing at times, the grandparents are always good for a laugh, a story, or a piece of crumb cake and consistently manage to produce exasperated gasps from their nervous grandson Nicholas.
